BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant, has indeed introduced a groundbreaking advancement in EV technology with its new “Super e-Platform.” Announced in March 2025, this platform powers two new models—the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV—capable of adding approximately 400 kilometers (249 miles) of range in just five minutes of charging. This capability stems from a combination of a 1,000-volt architecture, a megawatt (1,000 kW) flash-charging system, and a newly designed battery with reduced internal resistance, allowing for ultra-fast charging speeds. BYD claims this matches the convenience of refueling a gasoline car, addressing a key barrier to EV adoption: charging time.
The system leverages an “all liquid-cooled megawatt flash-charging terminal” and an automotive-grade silicon carbide power chip, enabling the vehicles to handle up to 1,000 volts and 1,000 amps. This is a significant leap over competitors like Tesla, whose latest Superchargers offer 500 kW and add about 270 kilometers (168 miles) in 15 minutes, or other Chinese brands like XPeng and Zeekr, which achieve 280–342 miles in 10 minutes. BYD’s innovation promises roughly 2 kilometers of range per second during charging, a feat unmatched in the mass-produced EV market as of now.
To support this technology, BYD plans to deploy over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China, though specifics on timeline and cost remain undisclosed. The Han L and Tang L, priced between $37,300 and $49,800, began pre-sales in China, with deliveries expected from April 2025.
