OpenAI’s latest image generator is now available to all ChatGPT users. Initially, the feature was only available to paying users, but due to overwhelming demand, OpenAI delayed making it free for all.
However, CEO Sam Altman has now confirmed that free users can access it, though with some restrictions.
Within a few hours after its release, the feature became popular among users for creating stunningly accurate Japanise animation’s Studio Ghibli-style artwork.
Because of its accuracy and the resemblance in style, it is also causing issues with the copyright and training data that the company uses.
Another potential concern with the tool is fake receipts, as people made deepfake restaurant bills with it. TechCrunch tested this and found that the AI makes an error with punctuation and bill total when it generates a fake receipt.
While OpenAI hasn’t specified the exact limits, Altman previously mentioned that free users would be able to generate up to three images per day.
After reaching this limit, users will need to subscribe to a paid plan to generate more.
This powerful image generator is powered by OpenAI’s advanced AI model, the GPT-4o. It was first introduced on March 25th and was always intended to be available across all subscription levels, including the free tier.
However, just a day after the launch, the rollout for free users was paused due to the overwhelming number of people trying it out.
Altman even joked about their computer systems, saying GPUs are “melting” under the strain.
At one point, ChatGPT gained a million new users in just one hour, demonstrating how popular the feature had become.
Besides this, OpenAI recently completed a massive funding round, raising an additional $40 billion. This is the largest amount ever raised by a private tech company, bringing OpenAI’s total valuation to an astonishing $300 billion.
It will receive $10 billion upfront, with the rest contingent on becoming a for-profit company. Despite rapid growth, OpenAI expects to remain unprofitable until 2029, projecting $125 billion in revenue by then.
