Keri Hilson didn’t intend to knock anyone down.
The “Pretty Girl Rock” singer got candid about her regret over recording her 2009 remix “Turnin’ Me On,” which included a verse that many fans have interpreted to be a Beyoncé diss.
“It’s a regret,” Keri admitted during an April 9 appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show. “But not in the way people would think because that’s a song I actually didn’t write. Those are not my words.”
In fact, the “Knock You Down” artist said that she tried to cut the verse from the track when Polow da Don—who produced “Turnin’ Me On” alongside Timbaland—first played her the additional lyrics, which were originally written by Ester Dean.
“Automatically, I was like, ‘I’m not saying that,’” Keri recalled. “That was my position.’”
As for which lyrics she didn’t want to sing? The verse in question read, “Your vision cloudy if you think that you’re the best / You can dance, she can sing, but she need to move it to the left, left / She need to go have some babies. She needs to sit down, she fake / I ain’t turning it off, I’m stay turning it on. Go ‘head and tell these folks how long I’ve been writing your songs.”
