Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag was critical of his team’s overall performance and himself following their 1-1 draw against FC Twente in the Europa League. The Dutch tactician believes that his team didn’t give their best display on the pitch, leading to a rather underwhelming result.
Man United Drew Against Twente at Old Trafford
The Red Devils were eyeing to start their Europa League with maximum points but that didn’t happen as they only grabbed one point. Playing in front of their home crowd, Man United did manage to take the lead through Christian Eriksen but Twente equalized after the break with an effort from Sam Lammers.
That result was disappointing, especially for United’s boss, Ten Hag, who was not shy in stating his disappointment after the game. The tactician specifically criticized his players’ lack of effort compared to what their opponents put out in that game. He was also disappointed with his team’s inability to finish off the game, especially when they were still one goal up.
“It was the game of their life, they fought for every yard +0 we didn’t. 99 per cent is not enough, you have to give 100 per cent, you have to kill the game, finish it off, we are leading 1-0, but you have to go for the second goal, then you kill the game,” Ten Hag said (via Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic)
Ten Hag Aslo Critical Of Himself Following Twente Draw
Aside from criticizing his players, Ten Hag also admits that he deserved some reflection following their failure to grab all three points this midweek. The tactician believes he is also part of why Man United failed to make the most of themselves at home against Twente.
“I saw in many games how high our work rate is, but today I have some criticism. It is not only the team, I have to look in the mirror as well. I am part of it,” the coach added
Ten Hag and Man United will need to work harder in their next matches if they want to go far in the competition this season. The Red Devils’ record in European games under the Dutch coach hasn’t been good as following the draw against Twente, Man U have only won one game out of nine with three draws and five defeats.
