Run-out mix-ups have become increasingly common in modern cricket, but extra caution is needed when the team is under pressure. That wasn’t the case with Nehal Wadhera and Josh Inglis against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where a comical misunderstanding led to Wadhera’s dismissal.
After losing the toss, Punjab openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya got off to a flying start, racing to 41/0 in just four overs. However, Krunal Pandya turned the tide by removing both openers in the fifth and seventh overs. The setbacks continued when Romario Shepherd dismissed skipper Shreyas Iyer in the eighth. What began as a promising start soon faltered, with Punjab reduced to 70/3 and Josh Inglis alongside Nehal Wadhera at the crease. The worry deepened when Wadhera was run out due to a comical mix-up between him and Inglis.
On the final ball of the ninth over, Suyash Sharma came over the wicket and delivered a good-length ball outside off. The Aussie batter punched it firmly back down the pitch. The ball bounced over Sharma and allowed the batters to sneak a single. Tim David sprinted from long on and chased the ball down with intensity. David threw the white rock to the non-striker’s end, where Virat Kohli was already alert, standing in front of the bowler. Kohli collected the throw on the bounce and spotted the confusion between the batters. Inglis had held his ground at the non-striker’s end, while Wadhera was completely unaware as he was almost alongside him, looking for a second. Kohli calmly turned and rifled a flat throw to the keeper. Jitesh Sharma did the rest and completed a straightforward run out with Wadhera well short of his ground. The mix-up was as bizarre as it was avoidable, and Twitter lit up with reactions.
