Cardiff City suffered relegation from the EFL Championship on Saturday, but American goalkeeper Ethan Horvath left it all on the field for the Bluebirds.
Horvath registered a five-save clean sheet in Cardiff’s 0-0 home draw with West Bromwich Albion. The U.S. men’s national team shot-stopper earned SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week honors despite Cardiff’s frustrating day in Wales.
Issac Price’s long-range effort was denied by Horvath in the opening 12 minutes before Darnell Furlong’s header was also repelled.
Adam Armstrong and Callum Styles became the latest West Brom players to have their chances rejected by Horvath as the two teams eventually played out a goal-less result.
Horvath, who jumped back into the No. 1 role in February, is likely to be on the move this season. The 29-year-old has kept three clean sheets in 16 league appearances, and brings ample experience to the table.
Cardiff City concludes its competitive schedule at Norwich City on May 3, which could very well be Horvath’s final appearance for the club.
Here is a closer look at the top Americans Abroad performers from the past week:
Christian Pulisic
AC Milan can thank Christian Pulisic for three points on Sunday.
Pulisic scored his 15th goal of the season in all competitions as the Rossoneri earned a 2-0 road win over Venezia. The USMNT star needed only five minutes to break the deadlock from Venice, helping kickstart a positive afternoon.
AC Milan will certainly need even more from Pulisic if they want to win the Coppa Italia and clinch a top-six spot.
Griffin Yow
Griffin Yow came to the rescue for Westerlo on Saturday.
Yow scored the club’s equalizer in the 97th minute as Westerlo tied Mechelen 2-2 in Belgian league action. The USMNT winger has scored three goals in his last four appearances, continuing a blistering run of form for the club.
Westerlo has four matches remaining and remains four points out of a Europa Conference League qualifying spot.
Cameron Carter-Vickers
It was another productive shift for Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Carter-Vickers helped Celtic earn a 5-0 road victory over Dundee United on Saturday, clinching the Scottish Premiership title for the fourth time in a row. The American defender completed 109 passes, won 10 duels, and made eight clearances, once again showing his dominance in the Scottish top flight.
The domestic treble remains on for Celtic, who have five matches remaining this season in all competitions.
George Bello
George Bello returned to LASK’s starting lineup on Sunday and didn’t put a foot wrong.
Bello logged the full 90 minutes at right wing back as LASK rolled past Austria Klagenfurt 6-0. The USMNT defender won four duels and created two offensive chances as LASK remained in contention for a Europa Conference League spot for next season.
