Sunderland defender Luke O’Nien speaking to Sky Sports:
“I’m lost for words. Just looking around and what this man [Dan Ballard] has done for this team. It’s incredible.
“Credit to Coventry. It’s a tough one to take [for them]. I think it was a hell of a tie, so credit to them and their fans, being on the receiving end of a loss in the semis.
“It was a tough one but they were a really tough opponent.”
On whether Sunderland felt the momentum shift in extra-time: “I don’t know really. It’s been a bit of a blur the whole game really.
“I saw Ballard’s top off and everyone running in different directions and I can’t remember the game to be honest, I can only remember the last minute.”
Here’s the social media reaction as the Gary Weaver and club commentary plus the insane limbs go viral; while Sunderland fans also taunt Frank Lampard in what was a dramatic playoff…
@DavidHartrick: What a great piece of commentary this is, say nothing until the moment comes where you can, let the pictures and noise breathe for a few seconds. Wonder if there’s another professional at Sky who could watch this and learn?
@Billie_T: Masterclass in commentary. No prewritten GCSE English shite like Drury. Let the limbs do the talking
@stusfootyflash: Great commentary, this. Let the pictures speak. Let the audience at home take in the atmosphere. Let the moment not be about the commentator. Brian Moore-esque.
@LiamHoofe: Genuinely have no idea how people can like football and not watch the play offs. Unreal scenes there.
@MaxPollard92: Absolute masterclass in commentary, appropriately long silence alongside the crowd noise before jumping in. That’s exactly how it should be done. Gary Neville would’ve said Day of the Jackal is now available to stream.
@bafc_lancaster: Brilliant noise/limbs plus someone absolutely Ketsbaia-ing a metal fence. And a commentator that shuts up for once and lets the atmosphere breathe. Lovely stuff.
@lloyd_215: Gary Weaver once again proving the best commentary is often no commentary at all, one of the best in the business
@TheLeedsRaccoon: you just cannot beat a grown man screaming like that, it’s how we all feel, almost speechless but somehow keeps speaking
@JoeTalbotWBA: Could be the best I’ve seen
@ped1980: No words needed, unbelievable stuff…..
@tomjardine_: Don’t think I’ve seen many better home limbs than that
@foreverayellow: the sunderland commentators got me in stitches of laughter, what a listen, what a reaction, fairplay. grown men screaming
