Haji Wright and Coventry City were in a dire position when Frank Lampard took over as manager, but the Sky Blues used a positive second half of the season to propel themselves into the EFL Championship promotion playoffs.
Wright and the Sky Blues earned a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday, sealing their place in next week’s playoff round. The result also ended Aidan Morris and Middlesbrough’s hopes of reaching the top-six.
Jack Rudoni played the hero for Lampard’s squad, scoring both goals in a shutout win.
Wright, who lead Coventry City with 12 goals, played the full 90 minutes in the match.
Coventry City will take on Sunderland in the promotion playoffs, while Sheffield United will take on Bristol City in the other two-legged tie.
The playoff series begins on May 8-9.
Brenden Aaronson, Leeds United win EFL Championship title
Leeds United needed a second half rally to win the EFL Championship title.
Second-half goals from Wilfried Gnonto and Manor Salomon helped Daniel Farke’s squad defeat Plymouth Argyle 2-1 in Saturday’s season finale. Despite conceding first through a Sam Byram own goal, the Lilywhites rallied and finished the season on 100 points.
Leeds United outlasted Burnley, who also finished tied on 100 points and earned the second automatic promotion spot back to the English Premier League.
Aaronson started and played 74 minutes in the match, making his 46th appearance of the season. The USMNT midfielder scored nine goals and added two assists in league play.
Whether or not Aaronson remains a Leeds United player is undetermined, but he played a key role in helping Leeds United get back to the top flight.
