We take a look at the favourites to become new Hull City manager, to become their 4th in a year, after sacking Ruben Selles.
Selles, appointed in December 2024 from Reading, managed to keep the Tigers in the Championship, avoiding relegation by goal difference after a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth on the final day of the 2024-25 season.
Despite this, owner Acun Ilicali has decided to have yet another change of head coach, in preparation for the 2025/26 season.
Selles won nine of his 28 league games, but the team struggled with the worst home record in the second tier, prompting Ilicali to seek a new direction.
This follows the dismissals of Liam Rosenior in May 2024, despite a 7th-place finish, and Tim Walter in November 2024 after a winless run of nine games.
Ilicali’s rapid turnover—four permanent managers since January 2022—reflects his pursuit of a play-off push, but it has sparked fan concerns over stability.
The club is now searching for a new manager, with Ilicali hoping for a swift appointment, with focus on someone to elevate Hull beyond mere survival.

Here’s how fans reacted amid the favourites to become new Hull City manager, their 4th in a year, after sacking Ruben Selles…
@CityHobo61: Ridiculous to constantly chop & change when the main errors & poor decisions where by the man right at the top. Nearly 2 weeks of messing around then he creates yet more instability. Seriously disenchanted with Acun’s approach. Stability & patience required.
@PaulBush99: A club in free fall and out of control. What a ridiculous decision
@BenOliver576: Fuck off Acun more money been spent in compensation after another short reign of a manager who is wrongly sacked he needs to give this next foreign unknown manager a 6 month deal save us a few quid when he’s sacked in December and we are bottom the league again
@Gadzooooooks: I was in favour of keeping Selles for stability rather than because I think he’s a good manager. Getting rid causes uncertainty again. Whoever is lined up is going to have the fans against him so it’s likely to be another relegation battle. Acun made the wrong decision. #hcafc
@JWhittlesElbow: This would be an appallingly irresponsible decision, and another act of summer lunacy we’ll spend a hard winter regretting. #hcafc
@t0m0wen: Utter Chaos. A madman runs our club. #hcafc
@charlottej1904: We better have a new manager in Monday or lined up sharpish. Although, what self respecting manager is going to come here just to have a 6 month blot on their CV? Wrong decision for me totally… #hcafc
@BobbiHuyton: Reserving judgement until we find out who replaces Sellés. Key thing for me is appointing his successor immediately & cracking on with business ASAP, if this is how we’re moving forward #hcafc
@tommyrugiada: I had my doubts about Selles towards the end of the season but he did do his job. He should be given a fresh start with the new season. This is madness now @acunilicali We’re becoming Watford. #hcafc
@NathanielCull: Gutted about this, he deserved the chance and time to really put his stamp on the team. The next Q&A there needs to be some serious questions asked of Acun’s decision making and process.
@NigelBrice64: @acunilicali you told us that when WE no longer wanted you here, YOU would leave. What has happened to that narrative now? I think most #hcafc fans are #acunout
@Sorro_Playz: Gutted for Ruben and for those fans that like myself thought he deserves to be #hcafc manager for 25/26. Fans want stability and a manager we respect! The fact @acunilicali keeps chopping n changing is making the club unattractive and look stupid! Back to square one AGAIN!!
@CityHobo61: Ilicali made a huge error of judgement in May last year, but defended it recently in a radio interview, he compounded it by recruiting the hopeless Walter. The pre season transfer window was an utter shambles. When stability is required he pulls the rug again. For all the good…
