Apple is expected to finally release its first foldable iPhone in 2026, entering a market that companies like Samsung and Google have been in for years.
Many people have wondered why Apple waited so long, and it turns out the main reason was the screen quality.
For a long time, none of Apple’s display suppliers could meet the company’s high standards, especially when it came to eliminating the visible crease that appears when the screen is folded and unfolded.
This crease has been a common complaint with other foldable phones. But earlier this year, Samsung became the first company to meet Apple’s strict requirements.
According to BusinessKorea (via 9to5Mac), they managed this by working closely with Amphenol, a company that also makes hinges for Apple’s MacBooks, to develop a better folding mechanism and display.
Because of this success, Samsung will be the exclusive supplier for the foldable iPhone’s screen, which is a rare move for Apple since it usually works with multiple suppliers to keep prices competitive and quality high.
Samsung’s six years of experience with foldable OLED screens since launching the Galaxy Fold in 2019 played a major role in sealing this deal.
Other suppliers like LG and BOE still haven’t met Apple’s standards. According to leaks, the iPhone Fold will feature a 7.76-inch internal screen when unfolded, about the size of an iPad mini, and a smaller 5.49-inch external screen.
Both screens will have sharp displays with high resolution and a 13:9 aspect ratio, offering a smooth and detailed viewing experience at 428 pixels per inch.
This foldable iPhone is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026 and could be priced between $2,000 and $2,500, making it Apple’s most expensive phone yet.
We expect to learn more about the foldable iPhone’s design and hardware configurations in the coming days.
