Huddersfield have made the decision to sack sporting director Mark Cartwight as fans continue to vent anger after defeat to Cambridge.
Mark Cartwight has been relieved of his duties following a 2-1 defeat to a relegation threatened club, and what has been a poor second half of the League One season.
He joined in July 2023 and Huddersfield were relegated from the Championship in his only full season in post.
Appointed in July 2023, Cartwright oversaw a turbulent period with five managers: Neil Warnock, Darren Moore, Jon Worthington (interim), Andre Breitenreiter, and Michael Duff.
The Terriers, now in League One, are five points off the play-off places with three games remaining, having lost five of their last six matches.
The loss, coupled with nine defeats in their last 12 games, intensified fan frustration, with boos and chants of “You’re not fit to wear the shirt!” directed at the players.
Cartwright, who joined in July 2023 after Kevin Nagle’s takeover, faced heavy criticism for the club’s recruitment and managerial decisions, including the sacking of head coach Michael Duff in March and the appointment of interim manager Jon Worthington.
Owner Kevin Nagle, aware of the unrest, had already promised “lots of changes” for the summer, as the club braces for another season in League One.
Huddersfield Town can confirm that Mark Cartwright has today been relieved of his duties as Sporting Director.

– Comments from CEO Jake Edwards
Huddersfield Town can confirm that Mark Cartwright has today been relieved of his duties as Sporting Director.
Having joined the Club in July 2023, Cartwright has been with Town for two seasons, leading our sporting endeavours at Canalside and overseeing all footballing activity.
Huddersfield Town CEO Jake Edwards commented:
“Undergoing a full review of our sporting operations ahead of another important summer for the Club, we have made the difficult decision to relieve Mark of his duties with immediate effect.
“Retaining the full support of the Chairman, our collective efforts will be focussed on completing a positive summer of activity both on and off the field, allowing us to head into the 2025/26 season with a renewed belief and confidence in all departments.
“On behalf of everyone at the Club, I would like to thank Mark for his efforts during his time at Huddersfield Town and wish him the very best for the future.”

Huge issues at @htafc and the divide between the fans and players is growing after another inept performance against another team in the relegation zone.#htafc pic.twitter.com/6USFdNYsZ5— ⚽️ Terriers Together 💙 (@TerrierTogether) April 18, 2025
Huddersfield Town Interim Head Coach Jon Worthington said, per Yorkshire Live: “It’s frustrating. I’m disappointed, absolutely.
“I felt going into the game it was an opportunity with who the other teams above were playing against. It turned out it was an opportunity the way the results went, and it’s an opportunity missed.
“As far as the issues go it’s a bit of everything. In both boxes it’s not good enough, and I think everyone can see that.
“It’s difficult to digest and go into what needs to change over the summer in that level of detail straight after a game, when emotions are running high, but there’s certain things that are pretty clear and they’ve already been voiced – and I would agree with that.
“The goals we conceded were very poor. Against Burton last week and this one here, they’re both games that were opportunities you have to take. That’s why the level of frustration is so high from our point of view.”
Cambridge boss Neil Harris said: “I asked for a fighting chance, I asked for some creativity and quality around the box. I think I’ve got both.
“We’ve certainly got both the character to show resilience after Huddersfield were excellent for 12 minutes, and for us to hang in there and not go behind was quality by us to adjust to a shape change so early in the game.
“I felt at half time we had just quietened the crowd, they were getting edgy and were frustrated with their own players. I felt something would come for us, fair play to the lads for hanging in there and being diligent.
“We got that impact from the bench which I’ve not had too often in my time in charge.
“Conceding in the manner we did from a set play was disappointing for us, we shouldn’t be doing that, but we responded accordingly and I’m proud of the lads.
“We know we’re still in a real tough moment and we’ve only got three games to go. We’ve got a huge game on Monday, a quick turnaround, and have to be ready for that, but we’ve given ourselves a chance.”
Twitter users reacted as Huddersfield sack their sporting director as fans continue to vent anger after defeat to Cambridge…
@PaulDWhitehead: No way can he or Edward’s be involved in appointing a new Manager. Now bring back Rambo
@JulieAnnMulvey: Good riddance. Every Stoke fan I know couldn’t wait to tell me how useless he was, thought we were mad to employ him. Onwards and upwards #UTT
@THEFOZZYONE: Jake Edwards needs to be the next to go @KevinNagleMLS. Bring Stuart Webber back to the club. I guarantee you if you get Webber in & get Wagner back in as coach. Them 3.5k season tickets you’ve already sold will double if not treble in the coming days. Make the right choices now.
@p_ross85: Had to happen, not all the signings are bad but clearly the footballing side of the club has been massively underperforming and achieving in the last 2 years. #htafc
@GamerJamesFM: This is such a vital appointment. Looking at the potential clubs coming down from the Champ, we have to hit the ground running.
@GovTerrier: I hope the many fans who said they’d renew if this happened do (please). I may not know you and agree with everything each other says but we do ALL want “OUR” Town back 💪🏻🔵⚪️⚽️
@PetchaayBoi: Season Card Renewals…📈 📈 📈
@TerrierNigel: What a momentus day. This is up there with my wedding day. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
@HtafcDream: Jake Edwards next to go soon as season over and DoF in place. Russell needs to go at end of season
@jake_htafc7: You’re not gonna post on Monday and tell us he’s reinstated right?
@totalhtfc: @TerrierNigel might as well deactivate your account now lad got nothing to complain about anymore 🤣🤣
@hojh1994: The problems at this football club run deeper than this, but it’s a start
@benjiboy78: Took you long enough @KevinNagleMLS but hopefully now you see what he did to bring this club down and now you have a major rebuilding for the summer, going forward listen to the fans they are the heart and soul of this club 🔵⚪️🔵⚪️
@HTFC_DaVe1908: Now time to sack yourself Mr Edwards close the door on your way out you absolute fraud #htafc
@HowardTatt60623: 12 months too late but totally the right decision, Hopefully new man alongside new manager are put in place in next few weeks giving them plenty of time to sort this shit out.
@jhtafc: Jake Edwards “On behalf of everyone at the Club, I would like to thank Mark for his efforts”. Not on behalf of the fans you stupid twat, you should be next.
