Meta is finally working on a dedicated Instagram app for the iPad, according to a new report from The Information.
Right now, if you open Instagram on an iPad, it’s just a stretched-out version of the iPhone app, which doesn’t look or feel good.
So, this move to create a proper app designed specifically for the iPad is something users have been wanting for years.
This move might have to do with TikTok’s uncertain future in the US due to new laws that could force it to be sold or banned entirely. Meta might see an opportunity to attract more users to its platforms, especially by improving access to devices like the iPad.
Instagram’s leadership has previously said there just weren’t enough iPad users to justify the effort.
As reported by The Verge, back in 2022, Instagram head Adam Mosseri responded to tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, saying that the iPad user base wasn’t big enough to be a priority.
He repeated that stance in 2023, explaining that with limited staff and many competing projects, an iPad app just didn’t make the cut. He did say it was a “good thing to do at some point,” but not something they were actively working on.
In the meantime, Instagram users on iPad have had to make do with either the web version, which has gotten a bit better over time, or by using the app through Apple’s Stage Manager feature, which helps resize and manage app windows.
While decent, that experience still doesn’t take full advantage of the iPad’s larger screen.
A native app would offer better design, performance, and usability, finally providing the polished experience that iPad users have been asking for.
If TikTok’s future is uncertain, Meta may be trying to ensure that it’s ready to welcome users who might be looking for an alternative.
