Newcastle United won their first major trophy in 70 years! They lifted the Carabao Cup after beating Liverpool in the final. Eddie Howe’s men put on a solid effort and come away with a 2-1 victory against the more favorite Arne Slot’s side
Newcastle Beat Liverpool to Lift the Carabao Cup
Both Newcastle and The Reds were hunting for their first trophy this season as they faced up at the iconic Wembley Stadium on Sunday. On paper, Liverpool were the favorite to take home the trophy, but The Toon Army had other ideas.
Howe’s team were keen on lifting the cup to end their 70-year trophy drought since their 1955 victory in FA Cup. Newcastle were showing their strong intent since the first 45 minutes, which saw them closing the half with a goal from Dan Burn.
Liverpool tried hard to get back on level terms, but it was the Magpies that managed to double their lead through their star striker, Alexander Isak’s close-range finish. The Reds were only able to pull one goal back late in the game following an effort from Federico Chiesa.
Unfortunately for Slot’s team, Chiesa’s goal was not enough to save them, as Newcastle hung on to win the Carabao Cup. It’s another disappointment for Liverpool as they saw another potential trophy vanish, but they still have the Premier League title that they can now fully focus on.
