I’ve seen many people giving up on Malo Gusto but personally I think we should be a bit more patient for now.
Remember what happened with Marc Cucurella? Dude was getting booed by the Stamford Bridge fans and now he’s turned into some sort of cult hero with them.
Gusto is currently going through the same terrible form that Cucurella went through at that time, and many fans have lost the faith in him already.
I think we should also look back to how well Gusto was playing when he first arrived at the club. At one point he had people asking whether he should be starting ahead of Reece James, that’s how good he was over an initial sustained period.
But yes, he has been absolutely awful this season, there is no doubt about it and we cannot just gloss over that.
Gusto needs to improve immensely otherwise I could lose my patience with him. But he has previously shown me enough in Chelsea colours to keep the faith in him for now and hope that this is just a sustained dip in form, which does and can happen to any player.
Gusto is still a young player but he will turn 22 next month. So he’s not a teenager anymore and he needs to seriously step up again.
I don’t think asking him to invert as a midfielder is helping at all and in fact is having a detrimental impact. And Enzo Maresca as a head coach needs to see this and react. I can’t believe he keeps playing him there.
Gusto has been at Chelsea since 2023 and he proved that he is a top class right back – many other big clubs wanted him at that point too. He needs to just play as a right back and let him thrive there. I don’t want to see him inverting, and I don’t want to bloody see him as a left back. Just buy a left back if we lack them!
But yes, those who are highlighting his terrible form are right to do so, and it is a bit concerning. But I am keeping the faith with Gusto because he has showed me enough to do so in the very recent past.
