Yankees starting pitcher Max Fried ended New York’s recent skid with a dominant pitching performance against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in a 4-3 win that brought New York to 7-5 on the season.
In seven shutout innings, Fried struck out 11 batters, walked none and allowed five hits as New York snapped a three-game losing streak. Things got dicey as the Tigers scored their three runs after loading the bases against closer Devin Williams in the bottom of the ninth, but the Yanks held on to seal Fried’s first win of the season.
Of his 11 Ks, seven came on swinging strikes. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Fried blew past designated hitter Justyn-Henry Malloy with a 95 mph four-seam fastball down the middle of the plate.
