A wicket falling off a no-ball is one of the rarer occurrences on a cricket field, but the same happening twice in the same game is nearly unheard of. Yet, Wankhede saw it all unfold on Thursday as Ryan Rickelton was called back to the crease after umpires spotted an unusual Heinrich Klaasen error.
Mumbai Indians did not find the going easy at a sticky Wankhede surface on Thursday, much like their opponents Sunrisers Hyderabad, as Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton set out to chase a competitive 163. The former skipper sparked life into proceedings immediately with a maximum-fuelled cameo of 26 and his departure only inspired his opening partner to take on the role of aggressor, evident through three back-to-back boundaries off Eshaan Malinga soon after. The visitors needed the Proteas gone and quick if they were to have any chance of holding fort, and the opportunity did arrive almost on cue as well only to be discarded because of a schoolboy error from the otherwise professional outfit.
With the ball gripping on the deck, Pat Cummins brought on Zeeshan Ansari as soon as the fielding restrictions were lifted in the seventh over and the leg-spinner took just four deliveries to deceive Rickelton. The wicket-keeper batter flayed a lofted drive through the covers, where the SRH skipper was waiting and put in an excellent dive to his right to grab onto the Kookaburra and send Rickelton packing. However, just as the 28-year-old was about to reach the dugout, the umpires called on him to wait while they went upstairs for a check. The replays showed that Klaasen, at the moment when Rickelton connected with the ball, had his gloves in front of the stumps which is forbidden by the laws of the game.
The entire team was visibluy distraught when they learnt the news, none more than Klaasen himself, while his compatriot enjoyed an unexpected reprieve much to Twitterati’s entertainment.
