Everton are preparing for a transformative summer transfer window, with major changes expected both in terms of arrivals and departures. As the Friedkin Group prepare to hand David Moyes a substantial budget, one outgoing now looks increasingly inevitable — Nathan Patterson.
Everton’s summer rebuild begins to take shape
The Toffees kept their powder dry in January, intentionally setting up for a heavy spend once the market reopens in June. Moyes already has clear targets in mind, including Ipswich Town’s breakout striker Liam Delap and defensive talent Maxime Estève — though Burnley’s promotion may complicate the latter deal.
Meanwhile, the club are also active in refreshing key areas of the squad — and the right-back situation is a priority.

David Moyes’ recent comments made it clear that Patterson is not part of his long-term plans. The manager openly admitted he was reluctant to move Jake O’Brien from right-back to centre-back, hinting at a lack of trust in Patterson’s ability to hold down the position:
“It could weaken the side down the right (if O’Brien moves). He’s done the role well, he’s not made us more open,” said Moyes.
Although Patterson was handed a rare start against Chelsea, he endured a difficult afternoon and was subbed off just after the hour mark — a performance that further cemented doubts about his future.
The situation has been made even clearer with Everton now frontrunners to sign Brighton full-back Tariq Lamptey, a move that signals a definitive shift in the club’s plans at right-back.
What next for Patterson?

Patterson arrived at Everton from Rangers in January 2022 for a fee of around £16 million, carrying huge promise from his time in Scotland. However, a combination of injuries and inconsistent performances has stalled his development badly.
The 22-year-old recently admitted that the past year has been particularly tough due to extended spells on the sidelines, but there seems little pathway for him to re-establish himself at Goodison Park under Moyes.
A return to Rangers could be on the cards, particularly with Kevin Thelwell — Everton’s former Director of Football — now set to take a leading role at Ibrox. However, finances could be a sticking point. Rangers are unlikely to match the £16m fee Everton originally paid, meaning some compromise would likely be required if a deal is to happen.
Nathan Patterson’s time at Everton appears to be nearing its conclusion as the Friedkin Group usher in a new era of ambition and squad renewal.
While his talent remains undeniable, circumstances and timing have worked against the young Scot at Goodison Park. A summer move — perhaps back to where it all began — now feels like the logical next step for all parties.
