New Pamban Rail Bridge Latest News: On the occasion of Ram Navami on Sunday, April 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the New Pamban Rail Bridge, the country’s first vertical lift sea bridge, connecting Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu with the mainland, and flag off a train as well as a ship from the bridge to witness its operation. The Prime Minister started the day by greeting everyone on the occasion of Ram Navami. “Ram Navami greetings to everyone! May the blessings of Prabhu Shri Ram always remain upon us and guide us in all our endeavours. Looking forward to being in Rameswaram later today!” he wrote on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter).

The PM is scheduled to inaugurate the New Pamban Rail Bridge at around noon.
At around 12:45 pm, he is set to attend a ‘darshan and pooja’ ceremony at the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram.
After that, at around 1:30 pm, he will dedicate to the nation various rail and road projects worth more than Rs 8,300 crore in the state.
He will also address the gathering on the occasion. The laying of the foundation stone and inauguration of the works will be webcast LIVE on the Prime Minister’s official channel on video-sharing service YouTube, starting at 1:30 pm.

- The bridge carries a deep cultural significance. According to the Ramayana, the construction of Ram Setu was initiated from Dhanushkodi near Rameswaram.

- Constructed with stainless steel reinforcement, high-grade protective paint, and fully welded joints, the bridge boasts increased durability and reduced maintenance needs, according to an official statement.
- It is built at a cost of over Rs 700 crore.
- The bridge is 2.08 km in length, featuring 99 spans and a 72.5-metre vertical lift span that rises up to a height of 17 metres.
- The bridge facilitates smooth movement of ships while ensuring seamless train operations.
- It is designed for dual rail tracks to accommodate future demands.
- A special polysiloxane coating protects it from corrosion, ensuring longevity in the harsh marine environment.
- Other projects being launched include the four-laning of the 28-km-long Walajapet-Ranipet section of NH-40 and the four-laned 29- Viluppuram-Puducherry section of NH-332. Additionally, the 57-km Poondiyankuppam-Sattanathapuram section of NH-32 and 48-km Cholapuram-Thanjavur section of NH-36 will also be inaugurated.
