Robbie Savage was in tears during his emotional interview on winning promotion with Macclesfield at the first attempt.
The Silkmen continue their wise up the pyramid, with a record-breaking title success in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.
A 2-1 victory over Bamber Bridge on Saturday meant his side secured promotion with six games remaining of the 2024/25 season.
Savage came in as manager, and got a lot of stick on social media and in the stands, but as manager Macclesfield FC, has gone on to win 29 of their 36 games so far this season – netting 88 goals and conceding just 26.
Speaking after the victory, Savage reflected on the season, the criticism, the effort from his team, his family, and overcome with emotion, now planning for next season in the National League North – making it clear that he intends to remain with the club despite interest from clubs higher up the footballing pyramid.
He said: “I’ve been lucky enough to captain four teams in the Premier League, play nearly 350 games in the top-flight, appear in Wembley finals and win 39 caps for my country.
“But Macclesfield being crowned champions of the Northern Premier League was my proudest moment of all.
“For all the haters, doubters and keyboard warriors, they have fuelled my fire and that of my players.
“I have answered every single person who spoke negatively about us.
“I have proved people wrong all my life. I am a fighter as you have to be after being released by the biggest club in the world [Manchester United] as a youngster.
“I’m overwhelmed by emotion. It’s the players who deserve every bit of credit. We know how much was on the game. I read out messages from fans in the team talk, there was no need for tactics or motivational speeches. I put on Facebook for fans, ‘what does it mean to them’, and I read them out to the group before the game, three or four of them.”
“The negativity, the narrative (that) it’s all about me, let people talk all they want. I put my money where my mouth is, I’ve proved everybody wrong. There’ll be people now who might say ‘Do you know what, fair play, well done’, but if they don’t then I’m not really bothered.
“I wish my father would have been here to see it. My mum said to me this morning, she can’t be here, she was ill all night with nerves, she said ‘I wish your dad was here to see you’ which would have been nice but listen, I’m quite emotional because the pressure this season has been absolutely extraordinary.
“Some pressure I thought I would never be under, to the point that my sons are worried to death about me having a heart attack. But that emotion is coming out now, once again, I’ve proved people wrong.”

Robbie Savage issues message back at Macclesfield haters after abuse and ridicule
List of latest promotions and relegations in non league – 22nd March 2025
At the start of the 2024/25 season, he said he could sack himself if Macclesfield failed to go up: “If I fail, I know my time will be up.
“I won’t be able to go back to being a director of football, sitting in the stands and judging other people if I’ve come up short. I know everything is on the line.
“Some of the stuff that was said when I took on the job was unpleasant to say the least. It was a horrible summer.
“But this team will get in the play-offs, and I believe we will go up, but if we don’t win promotion I will walk away from the dugout, take a back seat as a part-owner and watch from afar.
“There will be people who hope I fall flat on my face, but if that happens it won’t be for a lack of effort.”
What a video this is. What emotion.
He gets all kinds of comments, abused at most away games, people were desperate to see him fail, but he has smashed this season out of the park.
He’s a great guy with a big heart & a huge part of our success. Cheers Sav @RobbieSavage8 🏆 🔵⚪️ pic.twitter.com/Z4bI3MnwLT— Silkmen Army (@silkmenarmy) March 23, 2025
