The stage play Rogers v Rogers, based on the internal struggles of the Rogers family during the Shaw takeover, finally has premiere dates set.
Rogers v. Rogers will run at the Guloien Theatre at Streetcar Crowsnest from December 2nd to 28th, 2025.
Penned by playwright Michael Healey and directed by Chris Abraham, the play was inspired by The Globe and Mail reporter Alexandra Posadzki’s book Rogers v. Rogers: The Battle for Control of Canada’s Telecom Empire. The play stars longtime Canadian Actor Tom Rooney.
The play is based on the internal struggles between Edward Rogers and his family following the death of company founder Ted Rogers. During the struggles, Matthew Boswell, Canada’s Commissioner of Competition, looks to derail the billion-dollar takeover of Shaw Communications.
Crows Theatre quotes that the play is inspired by one of the most dramatic boardroom showdowns in Canadian history ” and describes the plot as examining “the price of pushing back, the unravelling bonds of kin, and the legacy that money can (and cannot) buy.”
Rogers has been in the news fairly recently for the Shaw acquisition. Videotron filed a $91 million lawsuit against Rogers over the Freedom Mobile deal, and Rogers locked out former Shaw employees following a unionization attempt.
Rogers also recently sold a stake in its network to Blackstone for $7 billion, which will be used to pay back some of the debts from the Shaw acquisition. The stake sold to Blackstone is non-controlling, and Rogers will retain full operational control of their network.
