Trent Alexander-Arnold will officially leave Liverpool FC at the end of the current season, with the 26-year-old England international set to join Spanish giants Real Madrid on a five-year contract.
The Liverpool academy graduate has informed the club of his decision not to renew his contract, which expires this summer, marking the end of a remarkable chapter at Anfield. Despite Liverpool offering Alexander-Arnold a lucrative new deal that would have made him the highest-paid full-back in Premier League history, the right-back has opted for a new challenge in La Liga.
Alexander-Arnold said: “I think first and foremost, I want to say it’s not an easy decision and there’s a lot of thought and feeling that has gone into it. I’ve been here 20 years now, loved every single minute of it, achieved all my dreams, achieved everything I’ve ever wanted to here.
“Giving everything day in, day out for 20 years, I’ve got to a point now where I feel like I need a new change, a new challenge for me as a player and as a person. And I think now is the right time for me to do that.”
Homegrown Star Declines New Contract to Pursue New Challenge in Spain
Real Madrid have long been admirers of Alexander-Arnold and had previously submitted a £20 million bid for him on New Year’s Eve—an offer that Liverpool swiftly rejected. However, with his contract running out, the Spanish club now secures the elite full-back as a free agent.
Contract talks reportedly intensified following the announcement of Arne Slot as Liverpool’s incoming manager, with sporting director Richard Hughes making early efforts to retain the defender. Despite successful negotiations with stars like Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, Liverpool were unable to reach an agreement with Alexander-Arnold.
The England international has been a key figure in Liverpool’s recent successes, contributing significantly to their Premier League and Champions League triumphs. His move to Real Madrid marks a significant shift in European football, as one of England’s top talents prepares to make his mark in Spain.
