Viola Davis has earned numerous accolades throughout her career, but none are as meaningful to the 59-year-old as being recognized as a “hero” by her daughter, Genesis, in the new movie G20.
On Monday, the How To Get Away With Murder alum appeared on Good Morning America to promote her upcoming Amazon Prime Video movie. During her interview on the morning show, the actress opened up to co-anchor Michael Strahan, telling the former football star that her daughters reaction to her project was “everything”.
“She was so excited. She kept saying, ‘Oh my goodness. Mom, Mom, you’re golden, mama. You’re golden!’ And she cried. She laughed,” Davis said of the 14-year-old.
“I loved being the hero to my teenage daughter. Because usually in these teenage years, you just disappear. They become zombies, and you become anything other than a hero.”
She added, “Her sitting there watching me like that… It just, yeah. It was everything.”
Davis and her husband, Julius Tennon, welcomed their daughter into their home, as an infant, in 2011 via adoption. The Fences actress told People Magazine in previous interview that in spite of all of her professional successes, that there was something that was still missing.
“It was great, but it was not fulfilling. I wanted my life to mean and be something deeper. That’s when the urge came, and the urge was just very, very, very, strong. So I have a kid now, and she is just the light of our lives.”
Davis is extremely supportive of her daughter, encouraging her to use “any source of expression” to show the world who she is.
“I encourage her to use any source of expression, whether it’s TikTok, painting, taking pictures,” she told People Magazine in a different interview. “I said, ‘Anything about yourself, even the things that you don’t think people will love about you, all of it makes up your beauty.’ I don’t want her to grow up with any shame.”
G20 makes its debut on Amazon Prime Video, April 10. It is definitely going to be one action-packed thriller that you do not want to miss!
